NWCEMS, The Northwest Center for Early Music Studies, now provides educational activities for adult amateur musicians
through its Community Collegia programs, described below.
Community Collegia
Continuo Ensemble: Lutes, Harps and Singers for
17th-century music.
The Continuo Ensemble was established for the study and
performance of seventeenth-century song and instrumental music. Since
its founding in 2003 it has performed over 30 concerts in churches,
universities, retirement communities, and many other venues around Seattle.
The Continuo Ensemble presented its first semi-staged baroque opera in June
of 2009, Antonio Cesti's La Dori, and has another opera production planned
for June of 2010. The ensemble is directed
by Gus Denhard and Bill McJohn. No audition required. Call (206)-325-7066.
The New Baroque Orchestra: 17th- and 18th-century
music for strings and winds.
Ingrid Matthews of Seattle Baroque directs this community
baroque orchestra. Period instruments preferred, but modern violins, violas,
and celli welcome! Learn about baroque instrumental style from a master
performer and director. No audition required.. Call (206)-325-7066.
Sine Nomine: Renaissance Choir
Founded in 2008, Sine Nomine is a mixed-voice, auditioned chamber choir
specializing in the fine performance of Renaissance music, including both
sacred and secular works from many regions and in many languages. The
ensemble’s performances have been praised throughout Seattle’s early-music
community. Sine Nomine has also performed for the Seattle Recorder
Society and Bethel Lutheran Church in Shoreline. Sine Nomine is
directed by the noted Seattle conductor and tenor,
Gary D. Cannon.
