Winds Around the World

Historical flute specialist Kim Pineda discusses and demonstrates flutes and recorders from different families, cultures, and times. Students learn about music and flutes made of clay, various types of wood, and plastic. Musical examples will include traditional South American music, 16th-, 17th-, and 18th-century European classical music, and folk songs from various countries.

Recorder Consort

Recorder familyHear music played by professional recorder players Vicki Boeckman, David Ohannesian and and others TBA The group will demonstrate the incredible variety of recorders, from the very small to the very large, and play music spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.

Guitars in Latin America

Guitarist Elizabeth Brown presents the history of the guitar and its music in the New World, using a variety of historical instruments. This presentation traces the development of music in Latin America: the influence of Spanish and Portuguese music and guitars, combining with African and indigenous cultures, and the folk and classical music of Latin America today, which reflects all of these diverse elements.

The Royal Lute

Join the most popular instrument on a tour of Europe's courts. Referred to as the "Queen of Instruments," the lute was capable of performing all the popular music if its time, from ballads to lively dances. Every court employed at least one "royal lewter," often at a rock-star salary! Elizabeth Brown, Seattle's own highly acclaimed lutist, guides this tour of 16th- and 17th-century music. (Not available as an assembly.)
