Music and Culture
A Visit by Hildegard and Eleanor
Meet two of the 12th century’s most prominent women: Hildegard
of Bingen and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Members of Seattle’s
Medieval Women’s
Choir, led by internationally renowned medieval music
specialist Margriet
Tindemans, portray Hildegard and Eleanor and their
respective circles of friends. Students will hear music from
Hildegard’s cloister and Eleanor’s court and will learn about
the lives led by women and girls under the influence of these two
remarkable women.

Songs of the Castle
Medieval music illustrates culture and life in a castle, using
voices, recorders, harp, psaltery, medieval fiddle, and percussion.
Children learn about daily life in a castle, as the narrative
progresses through the great hall, the tower, the stables, the
dungeon, the chapel, and the surrounding village. Includes
commentary on the lives of people from throughout the class
structure. Preparatory materials on the instruments demonstrated are

Music of the Renaissance
The 16th century comes to life with David Ohannesian,
recorders, baritone Richard Hill.
baritone voice, and another performer TBA. Comic and serious music reflecting life in six different European
countries, played on recorders, pipe and tabor, harp, krummhorns, and
sackbut.

Shakespeare's Music
Music was an integral part of the theater in Shakespeare's time,
and there are numerous musical references in his work. Students will
learn how he incorporated music into his plays by hearing songs and
dances from the time. Includes demonstration of a variety of
instruments, comments on daily life in the Renaissance, and
demonstration of Renaissance dance. This program ties in nicely with
units on Shakespeare or on Renaissance European history. Preparatory
materials on instruments provided. Performed by Kathy

Music and cultural history are not only educational but fun for
their own sakes when this pair of true Renaissance Men visit your
classroom. Witness the young violin-playing music teacher, Young
Master Tom, refining the musical knowledge of his gentleman
employer, Maestro Salvatore, a nobleman and player of the viola da
gamba, recorder, and crumhorn. The Maestro demonstrates his skill in
the arts of dancing, of the sword, and of the word - particularly
his lively wit. Characters are brought to life in costume by
Shulamit Kleinerman and Cecil Longino.

Medieval Women
Your classroom is just one stop along the way for a pair of
traveling trobairitz, female composer-performers from the Middle
Ages. In costumes and in character, with harp, vielle, (a medieval
precursor of the violin), drums, and tambourines, these women bring
medieval culture to life in story and song. Shulamit Kleinerman
leads this duo.

Renaissance Ball
Welcome a group of sumptuously-costumed Renaissance nobles into
your midst! Members of the interactive living-history ensemble Blood,
Love, and Rhetoric share courtly pastimes from the reign of
Queen Elizabeth I. including song, dance, and instrumental music.
Period etiquette and drama puts the music in its social context.
Students experience history by participating in dances, games, and
other arts. This program can be tailored for classrooms or
assemblies at any grade level, and can tie in with specific studies
in literature, drama, or history.
Cost for a 45-minute appearance is $300, longer or multiple
visits negotiable.

Space and Time in Renaissance Arts
Similar to the above, with the addition of the noble art of
fencing, in order to explore the ideals of proportion and measure
that underlie the Renaissance arts. Cartesian geometry comes to life
as students experience and compare the spatial movement patterns of
fencing and dance. Metrical proportion is explored in dance and
music, revealing the ordered world in which Renaissance nobles moved
and thought.
