The Early Music Guild presents the world renowned Italian
opera company La Venexiana in a staged and costumed opera
performance of Monteverdi’s timeless masterpiece. Touring from
Italy with Italian soloists, chorus, and 30-piece period
instrument orchestra, this production has garnered ecstatic
reviews throughout Europe, and won the Editor’s Choice award in
England’s prestigious Gramophone magazine. Composed in 1607,
L’Orfeo was both Monteverdi’s first music drama and Europe’s
first great operatic masterpiece. It retells the story of the
musician Orpheus and his quest to bring his beloved Eurydice
back from the depths of the Underworld through the enchanting
power of his music. L’Orfeo portrays love, grief,
courage, doubt, and eternal devotion through Monteverdi’s
exquisite combination of vocal and orchestral splendor,
madrigal, and dance.
