Kevin Mallon’s take on a biography
A reflection from the Seattle Baroque Orchestra Guest Director
“Every time I look at my biography– the usual long list of achievements by a musician, I wonder, what does this really say about me! On reflection these achievements mean more to musicians that to the average person. Yes, it is important that I have done this opera or that, or that there are CDs aplenty, but in reality all of this says little as to who I am. So, here goes!
I grew up in Belfast in the midst of the troubles- during the 1960s and 1970s. It’s often difficult to describe, but during all the violence, life went on; I went to school, did music, played football on the street (that’s soccer to you). And yet, life was restricted. My poor parents probably had to drive me to more activities than they would have preferred and there was always the scare that we would get into trouble after dark. What trouble? That we would be targeted by some gang, or be in the wrong place at the wrong time when a bomb went off, or worst of all, that we would associate with and maybe join the IRA. None of that happened—and I think that the restrictions, being forced indoors on an evening, drove me to lose myself on the violin.” Read the full story
“…you are trying to achieve something that is beyond good or bad, right or wrong. If everyone is inspired to focus on a strong musical vision, one that is achieved together…one can feel the flow of the music.” -Kevin Mallon
